About
Thurning Instruments Ltd.Thurning Instruments Ltd has been based in Dorset in the South West of England since 1984.
We are an ISO9001:2000 company, our QMS was set up in 1998/1999.

The company produces the highest quality electronic instrumentation for specialist measurement tasks. We use a range of techniques, including X- and gamma rays. We offer electronic design and consultancy services, drawing on our experience of analogue and mixed signal development. |
We have advanced electronic design facilities and we have CAD facilities for mechanical and radiation safety design. Our production volumes are limited, so we work closely with a number of local firms for the manufacture of circuit boards, hardware and mechanics. |

We manufacture a range of radiation detectors (normally for use with X-rays or gamma rays). These detectors are used for non-contact thickness and density measurement (and on-line materials analysis). Using these detectors, we produce special purpose gauging systems for a range of industries. This instrument is a single beam gamma densitometer, for academic two-phase flow studies |

Electronic design:
Our electronic design services derive from our strength in low noise analogue and mixed signal design. We have worked with a number of local companies as well as multi-national consortia, and are currently working on projects in high performance data logging systems and in medical electronics.
Customers also use our services in the development of control algorithms, diagnosis of noise and stability problems and management of development projects.
We do smaller developments for local industries, where it is important for us to be nearby to assist them in getting into production. To support these customers we have developed expertise in low power design and design for volume production.
Radiometric Gauging:
Many of the techniques and technologies used in the company were developed through experience in the Nuclear and Chemical industries, where reliability and safety are taken very seriously. We support our customers with advice on the physics and capabilities of radiometric measurement and guidance on safety and the legal requirements for working with radiation.
The range of industries that use our measurement technology is now far wider:
Our customers are using radiometric instruments for:
Gauging web products,
Density measurement for inspection of refractories, ferrite pressings and castings,
Void fraction measurement for multi-phase flow metering,
Logging geological core samples (ice, sediment and rock).
Customers for our radiometric products are mainly European: much of our production is delivered to partners and customers in the EC, however our products are available worldwide. We have technical staff who can speak German, French and Italian.
